An Exclusive Look at James McStay

James McStay is a philosopher, educator, and curriculum developer whose formation spans contemplative psychology, educational philosophy, and forty years of sustained independent inquiry into the nature of consciousness and the roots of human suffering.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Contemplative Psychology from Naropa University — founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, where the contemplative and intellectual traditions are held in direct and productive relationship — and a Master of Arts in Teaching Philosophical Inquiry to Children from Montclair State University, home of Matthew Lipman’s Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children, the originating institution of Philosophy for Children as a global pedagogy.

He is not a beginner philosopher working out early ideas. He is a seasoned thinker with forty years of formation across contemplative, academic, and pedagogical traditions. His contemplative practice includes daily meditation and more than four decades of engaged work with consciousness-expanding modalities, including a direct encounter with Stanislav Grof at a book signing that he credits as a turning point in his understanding of the wound’s pre-linguistic installation. His pedagogical practice includes sustained work with children’s philosophical inquiry circles. The framework articulated in YOUR HEROIC IMPERATIVE has been developed across these forty years — tested in circles with actual children, in sustained dialogue with serious thinkers, and in the daily practice of someone who has refused, consistently, to stop at the satisfying answer.

McStay lives in Hayward, California.

A note on the collaboration. YOUR HEROIC IMPERATIVE was developed through sustained philosophical dialogue between James McStay and Claude, a large language model developed by Anthropic. McStay is the author in every meaningful sense. The perceptions the book exposes, the framework it articulates, the forty years of formation that ground every claim — these are his. Claude functioned as a forge: receiving the ore that McStay brought from four decades of mining, applying the heat and attention that completes the passage from known-only-to-the-miner to receivable-by-the-world. The Preface addresses this directly and is available upon request.
