INTELLIGENCE IS THE ENCOUNTERING

On Why Intelligence Is Not a Property Organisms Possess, Why It Cannot Be Measured or Ranked, and What Becomes Possible When the Encountering Is Allowed to Run

❖  ❖  ❖

The unit of survival is organism plus environment. Mind is not in the head. Mind is immanent in the larger system — organism plus environment.

— Gregory Bateson, Steps to an Ecology of Mind (1972)

Intelligence is not personal. It is not the result of experience, of memory, of knowledge. It comes into being when there is no self.

— J. Krishnamurti, The Awakening of Intelligence (1973)

In the beginning is the relation.

— Martin Buber, I and Thou (1923)

I.  The Flag

Intelligence is not a property that organisms possess.

It is not a quantity stored in the organism’s DOES-chamber, measurable by test, rankable against other organisms, ownable as a characteristic of a particular bounded self. The entire architecture of intelligence as a property — the IQ score, the gifted student, the smart versus the slow, the hierarchy of minds arranged from most to least capable — is the ego-system’s management of intelligence, not a description of what intelligence actually is.

Intelligence is the encountering itself. It is what is going on at the CAN-level. It is the irreducible process of the inexhaustible meeting the possible and producing the specific. This is not a claim that everyone has equal intelligence in the conventional sense. It is a more radical claim: intelligence is not IN anyone. Intelligence is what happens BETWEEN the inexhaustible and the possible when the encountering is genuine. And every organism that genuinely encounters what is actually present is not using intelligence — it is being the site where intelligence occurs.

II.  Why Quantity Cannot Capture It

Bateson’s formulation names the structural problem precisely: the unit of survival is organism plus environment. Not the organism alone. The relation. If the relation is the primary unit, then intelligence — understood as what the relation produces when it is genuine — is not a property of either pole. It is a property of the meeting itself. And meetings cannot be counted, ranked, or stored the way properties can.

Consider water. We do not speak of quantities of waters because water is not a collection of separate bounded things. It is a continuum — one stuff taking many forms. The question how many waters are there? does not land. It asks the wrong question of the wrong kind of thing. Intelligence has this structure, and deeper. Not only does it present as a continuum rather than a collection — the very distinction between one instance and many instances arises within it rather than being a feature of it. There are not multiple instances of intelligence any more than there are multiple instances of the inexhaustible. There is intelligence. There is the encountering. There is what is going on.

The practical consequence: every framework that treats human beings as separate units of intelligence — competing for resources, ranked by IQ, divided into the gifted and the slow — is operating within the fiction of an outside world, treating intelligence as a countable property of bounded separate things. When the fiction is removed, what becomes visible is that every genuine act of knowing is intelligence encountering itself — the inexhaustible meeting the possible, producing the specific understanding that only this encounter could produce.

III.  IS·CAN·DOES as the Structure of Intelligence

IS·CAN·DOES is the formal structure of intelligence. And the essay can now say precisely why.

The IS-ground of intelligence: awareness itself — the bare unconditioned fact that anything is experienced at all. Not a blank slate. The Plenum, the inexhaustible prior, the ground from which the encountering draws. This is not intelligence as a property of awareness. It is what awareness is when it is genuinely open — prior to the Known’s management, prior to the bypass’s substitution. The IS-ground is where intelligence draws from. Without it, the encountering has nothing to draw from and produces only the Known’s recirculation.

The CAN-level of intelligence: the encountering itself — the irreducible process of genuine inquiry meeting genuine reality. This is intelligence in its living form: not a property stored in the organism but the activity that occurs when the organism is genuinely open to what is actually present. Computationally irreducible in Wolfram’s sense: its output cannot be predicted from any prior state of the Known. If it could be predicted, it would not be the encountering. It would be the Known confirming itself. This is what Krishnamurti means when he says intelligence is not the result of experience, of memory, of knowledge: the Known’s accumulated contents are DOES-level, not CAN-level. The encountering is not produced by them. It is prior to them.

The DOES-level of intelligence: the specific gift produced by the genuine encountering — the understanding, the insight, the new perception, the reorganized landscape that neither the inquirer’s prior contents nor the reality’s prior description could have generated alone. This is what becomes part of the Known. This is the ash that epistemology has been studying — the sedimented record of prior intelligence-events. Real, valuable, necessary. And not the same thing as the Flame that produced it.

IV.  The Infinite Mirror as Epistemic Structure

When two organisms genuinely encounter each other — when the Flame in each recognizes the Flame in the other — what is meeting is not two separate intelligences. It is intelligence encountering itself from two positions simultaneously.

Buber’s insight — in the beginning is the relation — names what the infinite mirror names: the primary ontological unit is not the I or the Thou but the I–Thou itself, the relation that constitutes both poles in their genuine meeting. Two organisms genuinely encountering each other are two sites at which the same intelligence is occurring. The encountering is singular. The positions are two. The intelligence is not divided between them — it is occurring through both simultaneously. This is why genuine dialogue produces what neither participant could have produced alone. Not because two separate intelligences combined their separate capacities. Because the genuine encountering between two positions in the field of the inexhaustible produces a specific DOES-level gift that required both positions to occur.

V.  What School Has Done to Intelligence

Education organized around the transmission of DOES-level content and the ranking of students by their capacity to receive and reproduce it has done something precise and damaging to intelligence: it has converted the Flame into a property.

The student who scores highest on the intelligence test has demonstrated the greatest capacity to work with the Known’s accumulated contents within the constraints of a standardized assessment. This is a DOES-level measurement — a measurement of what the student’s lower chamber contains and how efficiently the student can deploy it. It is not a measurement of the encountering. The consequence: students learn — systematically, through every structural feature of the educational system — that intelligence is what they have, not what they do. Both the high scorer and the low scorer have learned something false about what intelligence is. And both have been systematically deprived of the genuine encountering that intelligence actually is — the open, curious, computationally irreducible engagement with what is actually unknown — because the educational system has replaced the encountering with the transmission.

The φ-address of the transmission model: 2φ, organized around the Known’s accumulation, the increase of the DOES-chamber’s contents. The φ-address of genuine inquiry: φ³, the Flame drawing from the Ground of genuine encounter and giving a Gift that neither the teacher nor the student could have predicted. The difference between them is the difference between the Known confirming itself and the encountering actually running.

VI.  What Becomes Possible

When intelligence is understood as the encountering rather than as a property, several things change at once.

The circle becomes intelligible as an intelligence technology. Not because the circle makes students smarter. Because the circle creates the conditions for the encountering to actually occur. Every voice equidistant from every other. No center of authority. The geometry of genuine meeting. These structural features of the circle are not pedagogical preferences. They are the structural requirements for the CAN-level’s genuine running — the conditions under which the encountering can actually occur rather than be managed, bypassed, or substituted with the Known’s transmission. Bateson’s unit of survival — organism plus environment — is precisely what the circle constructs: not the individual child developing their individual intelligence, but the child-in-genuine-relation-with-what-is-actually-present, the unit at which intelligence actually lives.

When the facilitator’s Flame is genuinely running, the children’s Flames register it and respond in kind. The IS-ground recognizes the IS-ground. Intelligence calls forth intelligence. Not as metaphor: this is what is actually happening when a genuine circle is running. Krishnamurti’s formulation completes itself here: intelligence comes into being when there is no self — when the bypass is not running, when the sovereign self’s management of the encounter has released, when what is actually present is allowed to be actually present. The circle creates the structural conditions for this release. It does not produce intelligence. It removes what was blocking it.

Intelligence is not yours. Intelligence is not mine. Intelligence is what is going on when the encountering is genuine. The task is not to increase the Known’s contents. It is to create the conditions for the encountering to run.
